史跡 高輪大木戸跡

高輪大木戸は、江戸時代中期の宝永7年(1710)に芝口門に建てられたのが起源である。享保9年(1724)に現在地に移された。現在地の築造年には宝永7年説・寛政4年(1792)など諸説ある。
江戸の南の入口として、道幅約6間(約10メートル)の旧東海道の両側に石垣を築き夜は閉めて通行止めとし、治安の維持と交通規制の機能を持っていた。
天保2年(1831)には、札の辻(現在の港区芝5-29-16)から高札場も移された。この高札場は、日本橋南詰・常盤橋外・浅草橋内・筋違橋内・半蔵門外とともに江戸の6大高札場の一つであった。
京登り、東下り、伊勢参りの旅人の送迎もここで行われ、付近に茶屋などもあって、当時は品川宿にいたる海岸の景色もよく月見の名所であった。
江戸時代後期には木戸の設備は廃止され、現在は、海岸側に5.4メートル、長さ7.3メートル、高さ3.6メートルの石垣のみが残されている。
四谷木戸は既にその痕跡を止めていないので、東京に残された、数少ない江戸時代の産業交通土木に関する史跡として重要である。震災後「史跡名勝天然記念物保存法」により内務省(後文部省所管)から指定された。

As the southern entrance of Edo, stone wall has been built on both sides of the old Tokaido of about 10 m road width. The closed to traffic at night and had a function of traffic control and the maintenance of public order.
In 1831, Kosatsu field was also moved from (Shiba, Minato-ku, 5-29-16 current) Fudanotsuji. Kosatsu field here, was one of the six major Kosatsu field of Edo "Nihonbashi Minamitsume", "Tokiwabashi outside", "Asakusabashi inside", "Sujikaibashi inside" and with "Hanzomon outside".
Send-off travelers to go to Kyoto, of travelers to go to Ise Shrine has been made. There was a teahouse here. At the time, views of the coast between the inn to Shinagawa from here was good. Here was famous as attractions see the beautiful moon.
Facilities Kido is abolished in the late Edo period, currently, only stone wall 5.4 m, 7.3 m length, 3.6 meters in height have been left on the coast side.
